January/February 2025 Runner Up: Fix It

Two chickens with white and brown feathers stand in straw by a wooden coop. Bright red combs, natural setting with green blurred background.
Fix It by Anne-Marie Kofoed

“The chicken coop needs fixing.” The back door squeaked behind Roger as he shuffled into the kitchen.

“I know dear.” Martha sipped her tea.

Roger placed the basket of eggs on the counter. “I’ll fix it after breakfast.”

“Sounds lovely.” She took a long deep breath as her shoulders slumped.

The omelette was delicious. He was an excellent cook, forgetful most days, but he still handled the skillet well.

“I’ll do the dishes.” She offered.

“I’ll go change the tyres.” He kissed her cheek.

Martha sighed, dropped the dishcloth, and picked up a hammer.

Guess, I’ll have to fix it myself.
