December 2024 Winner: An Enticing Souvenir

Elliot avoided Grace’s eyes, focusing instead on the star topping the twenty-foot balsam fir that fronted NYC Rockefeller Center. Melting ice numbed his knee and she impatiently tapped her ice skate as he gathered his thoughts.

Fast and to the point, before the quaking-blizzard. It happened every time. He’d begin his rehearsed speech, it cut short when the world turned upside-down.

Words shot forth, “Will-you-marry-m…” but he was foiled again when the ground violently shook and the world went white.

“For the love of God; give it a rest.” Mama said, yanking the snow globe from the manic toddler’s sticky hands.
